My wife and I recently stayed at Promenade hotel for the sake of reviewing the hotel. The welcome at the Promenade Hotel, Kota Kinabalu was as good as at any Far Eastern hotel. With smartly dressed, attentive staff and a seamless check in procedure, was very welcoming after a long day of tiring day at work.
However, things went downhill a bit from there as the room was a little bit shabby although big enough for two people with enough space to store clothes and so on.

Firstly, the shower room
The bathroom was clean, if a little old fashioned with no separate shower and no bidet but the bed was extremely comfortable and the sea view was stunning. Do go for the sea view as another guest told us that the city view wasn’t that interesting, although I believe that the sea view will soon be disappearing due to building works.
Under renovation work
The good news is that the rooms are undergoing extensive renovations from 9am to 5pm daily. As we were out grinding out day job during the day, the work didn’t bother us at all. Many guests were business people so they were out as well and we didn’t hear anyone complaining of being disturbed by the work in progress.
The choice of TV channels was very limited. We weren’t bothered because we were not here for holiday. But a lone business traveler might be disappointed and in the same vein the only WI-FI available was in the lobby although there was hard wired internet available in the rooms for which I think there was an additional charge.
The food is surprisingly good
Eateries include a buffet restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner, a formal restaurant offering Cantonese and Szechuan cuisine for lunch and dinner as well as Dim Sum and a café serving cakes and pastries. For drinking there was the lobby lounge and bar and a separate cigar bar. We actually only ate breakfast in the hotel as it was so centrally located that there were plenty of restaurants within easy walking distance as well as shopping, giving a better flavour of this lively city which is both traditionally Malaysian and cosmopolitan.
The buffet breakfast was excellent with a good range of choices for all tastes, both Eastern and Western. I had a very nice omelette preceded by delicious fresh fruit but there were loads of other things to choose from, too numerous to mention.
Other facilities offered include a business centre, tour desk, a fully equipped gym, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and outdoor pool with kids pool, massages, hair and beauty salon and parking.
The only thing we used was the pool which was set in lush gardens and was sparkling clean. Sun beds, parasols and towels were provided too.
Our final thoughts
My abiding impression of this hotel was the warmth and friendliness of the staff from the bus boys to the management. Its excellent location and standard of service more than made up for the slightly tired appearance which is, in any event, being addressed by the renovations. I would certainly recommend Promenade Hotel Kota Kinabalu as a convenient city centre hotel well placed for both tourists and business people.
